Full Version: Metal Gear Solid 3 - Running slow

Hey all,

I'm pretty new to this, but I just tried running metal gear solid 3 and can't seem to get it to run smoothly. Some areas are fine, like during radio transmissions, but general gameplay is down to about 15FPS.

Can you guys help me tweak PCSX2 so I can run this as smoothly as possible?

Here are my comp specs:

CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 @ 3.00GHz (2 cpu's) ~3.0GHz
Memory - 4096 MB ram
Win 7 ultimate 64 bit
Graphics - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260

Right now PSCX2 is set up as follows:

GS - GSdx SSE2 rendering Direct 3D 10/11 hardware
I have no speed hacks enabled.

Any help would be great, thanks guys.
PCSX2 settings? Plugin settings?

Right now I'm running:

GSdx 3068 SSE2 - 0.1.16 configured for Direct 3D9 (I've tried Direct 3D10 too) hardware, logarithmic Z, Alpha correction, and native resolution. I've tried with and without speed hacks to no avail.
SPU2-X r3117 - 1.4.0
what about other games, fast or the same?
Dude, you could totally use the SSE4.1 version of the plugin (Core 2 Duo E8400 supports SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1), but unfortunately, I haven't had much luck running this game fast, either. You could try speed hacks, VU cycle stealing settings and so on.

Great thanks! I tried using SSE4.1, and VU cycle stealing set to full. It goes a bit faster now (maybe like an extra 5%). I should re-clarifly my problem though. My FPS counter at the top of the PCSX2 window pretty much reads a constant 60FPS, its just that the game noticeably slows down by about 50% in high intensity areas, including the sound and music, which essentially makes the game unplayable.

Is it just that my comp is not powerful enough to run this?

Yes, OC that cpu.
The slowdown problems you describe are caused by the cycle modifying speedhacks.
Read their warnings Wink
You need a machine powerful enough to get you 60fps without VU cycle steal or the EE rate hack.
you cant get through the first level without slowdowns, its kinda normal in this "i cant see the meadow, cause there's too much grass!!"-scenes.

and imho ee cyclerate gives no speedup at all and yes, using vu stealing results in wrong fps reading and slower gameplay.
