Also, the bad side effect may also simply be a result of PCSX2. Switching from hardware to software mode and back with F9 fixes it by returning it to black.

I converted the Starwars Battlefront 2 NTSC pnach to Pal. This suffers the same issue as the NTSC version in that it still needs a full render fix.
This games also uses the same pnach code as the NTSC version, 02F4B541

nope, in software the same effect, that is why my patch is vert- only

Keep pressing F9 repeatedly, and it should turn black eventually.
I'd like to see if it looks normal on a real PS2.
