Display resolution is not a main factor for slowdown. Its the GSDX internal Resolution which sets at which resolution the graphics will be displayed.
The image is stretched to fit in the screen.
Also, a 4:3 aspect ratio ( 1920 x 1440 ) can be larger than a 16:9 (1920 x 1080) ratio.
