I wanted to record some footage of my favorite games, which codec is the best to record in?
Depends on your specs, your needs, and a million other things.

What are you trying to record, for what reason, where it will wind up(e.g. Youtube, your hard drive, etc)? What are your specs? Answer those and then we can maybe help.
depends a lil more on what resolution you wanna record. the encoder's efficiency. the quality settings. or really your specs. that makes up what you can record 'live' and playable. default is to have atleast 4+ cores (more is better 'live') and use h264 with some instant/fast compression with a bit of a generic 16 mbit at 1080p. you can refine/recode the video with a bunch of settings when you finalize it.

For outright capture I'd use h264 GPU encoded at 50 megabits 1080p60, rather than 16 megabits CPU encoded. But that's just a preference, and as I said above depends on hardware.
