I know upgrade are computers, but is there also anything we can do to make it run faster outside of upgrading? Like does defraging work? clearing up disc space etc?

Overclocking..

defragmentation or clearing up disc space does nothing, only overclocking works and some games work better in vista than xp

Overclocking is also out of the picture, I have a dell .

But no, short of overclocking and not running a ton of programs in the background, there isn't much you can do.
