Have done some more looking into this, and it seems to depend on whether I use Intel or NVIDIA graphics on my laptop.
With NVIDIA graphics, I get the error above. With Intel, the emulator runs, but the display looks like it doesn't clear to black on each frame, and the graphics seem to leak the desktop through them, and overlay pixels until the whole screen becomes white or nearly so.
