Hi I'm going to upgrade my cpu soon and was originally thinking about a
"AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ 3.2GHz"

Then I saw this a
" AMD CPU AM2 7850+ Black Edition Athlon 64 X2 Dual CORE 2.8GHz"
and was wondering if anyone has any info if they are any good,I did see
somewhere that someone was saying that they are faster than a 6400+
due to the improved architecture.
Thanks in advance.
Why you just compare to 7850BE and not to new one like PhenomII X2 550BE 45nm 3.1Ghz and AMD Athlon X2 250 45nm 3.0Ghz, i saw both cpu in website are very well in performance and can overclock in higher between 3.8ghz-4.2Ghz in air cooling. If your mobo support those cpu then ugrade with them.

Register's right: If you can upgrade to the Phenom II X2 550 BE or the Ahtlon II X2 250, do it. Both are better compared to the Athlon X2 7850 BE, since the latter is based off the architecture of first-gen Phenoms.

Thanks for the reply not sure if my motherboard supports am3 socket.
It's an Asrock ALiveNF5-VSTA. I know it supports am2/am2+.
AM3 is backwards compatible with AM2+..

But what NB and SB you got? The best combination is a Phenom II based CPU with a 790FX/GX NB and 750SB.

NB = Northbridge
SB= Southbridge

Get a Phenom II 550 3.1GHZ black edition, they will overclock to 3.6-3.9GHZ roughly and you may also be able to unlock a core or two.

Just realized I put wrong motherboard it should be a AM2NF3-VSTA
it's nForce3 250 Chipset NB
Looking at Asrock site cpu listings it supports:
Phenom II x3
Phenom II x4
doing a search online it supports Phenom II 550.
Thanks again.
