Need for Speed: Carbon is only listed as Intro on v0.9.6 under the compability list. There is a really high risk that the game still doesn't work on the latest beta, which would explain your problem.
So if you have v0.9.6, the game won't work. Your only chance is to try the latest beta.
Where is the beta version available?
BTW, which one is latest direct X for Xp?
XP can only use DirectX 9
