I've been reading through this forum for possible configuration fixes for quite a while, and have yet to be able to play any of my games with any stability. So, can my computer run PCSX2?
AMD dual core 4200
4 Gigs of RAM
ATI 4850 512mg
I've been trying games like Kingdom Hearts 2, Shadow of the Collosus, Black, and God of War. All of them have the same choppy graphics and sound problems no matter the settings I use. I'm using the build 1456 beta version now and have the same problems. Tried changing plugins and settings for everything. Kingdom Hearts is the only one I've even managed to attempt gameplay on, and it chugs along at 20 FPS during gameplay. And that's with the speedhacks on and all the settings I found in another thread.
So is it my system? I'm thinking my processor may be too low end these days.
Very bad. Your CPU is not good enough. Try to changing this crap first or overclock it - when report here.
You should be fine with 2D games such as Disgaea etc (most Nippon Ichi games), but for most others the CPU is way too slow for emulation, as V0id said. RAM and GPU are fine.
Even though what V0id said was rather offensive, he's right. Your CPU isn't good enough for most games. The Kingdom Hearts series is known not to be too demanding on the CPU, but still... You need something decent.
If you know what possible CPUs you can upgrade to, then go ahead. Otherwise, tell me what your motherboard is (brand and model names), and I'll give a look into it.
Ok, good to know. I wasn't planning on upgrading my processor until AMD catches up to intel. I hate intel for personal reasons. But unfortunately their i7 series destroys the horrible phenoms...
I suppose I could throw a cheap am2+ 5800 or 6k in temporarily.
Yeah, I can run quite a few games well with my 5200 (eg. FFX high res at 60 fps), so a 6000 should do pretty well if you can find one. I need to upgrade to be able to play some of my more demanding games smoothly though, such as FFXII and MGS3.
Use the latest PCSX2 beta ... this have fix Infamous ATI bug.

You have a +5200 and can't play FFXII? I have a +5000 and I'm pretty much at the end of FFXII.

Well, the first generation of Phenoms weren't that good, starting with the infamous TLB bug — which got fixed later on, but still... Anyhow, the Phenom II series is far better, especially the black edition CPU's which overclock pretty easily. Not as fast as the i7's, but also way cheaper, especially if you consider the price of the motherboards. Hey, if the i7 had such a good bang for your bucks ratio, they'd represent more than 1% of Intel sales.
If I were in your shoes, I'd do as you say and get a cheap dual core Athlon until AM3 CPUs and mobos cost cheaper — then you might be able to get USB 3.0, SATA 3.0, etc.
Yeah, that's definately my plan. The ASUS board I have now can easily upgrade to the 6k. So that would give me plenty of power until then. Thanks for your help. Now I won't be spending several more hours trying to get this thing running on this system.
I found a 6000 chip for about 80 bucks, so I'll probably get that. The one thing I really don't like about the 3 gig chips though is their incredibly low cache...
