AMD FX-8350 vs Intel i5-8400

I currently have the FX-8350 and have been considering upgrading to the i5-8400 (can get a nice deal from my friend).
My question is if I could get better performance from the i5-8400 with pcsx2? I'm pretty sure I can but just figured i'd ask here.

As a side question is the i5-8400 as good as an i7-7600k? My cousin keeps telling me it isn't (he has the -i7-7600k) and I should just stay with my fx-8350.

7600k allows overclocking(you also must have a motherboard that allows overclocking)but at base stats,8400(it also have 2 extra physical cores which increases the multi threaded performance).

In my opinion i5-8400 is the better choice between those two

Seeing that comparison, the i5-8400 is the best option to take. It's not that much different than the i7-7600K other than the lack of overclocking the CPU. If you can get the i5-8400, that would be plenty for PCSX2, including for the demanding titles.

Thanks for the reply. I'll be going with the i5-8400 just wanted to make sure and you both were helpful in finalizing my decision. I don't care about overclocking either so that isn't even a positive for me either.

That is not a rare case when AMD is cooler and cheaper, for which we love AMD.

Ryzen 5 2600 STR = 2005
Intel Core i5-8400 STR = 2336

The 3000 series is up to par, the 1000 and 2000 series are comparable to 3rd or 4th gen Intel, but the 3000 series is actually better in stp then the 9th gen Intel.

Ryzen 5 3600x stp = 2,909 $250ish
I9 9900k stp = 2,898 $450-500
I9 9900kf (k with no igpu) stp = 2,919 $450-500

This Intel's in the same price range are 100-200 points behind.

But to be fair none of this really matters since OP is getting a good price on the i5-8400 which is a fine CPU able to handle most of PCSX2's compatible library, mostly at full speed (there are a few exceptions). If I was having to buy a New CPU right now for PCSX2 I would probably go Ryzen 3000, but If I got a good enough deal I would compare the deal to the difference in performance and look at what I really needed for the games I like and make my decision based on that.

I have an FX 8350 too and we are in a time when AMD is better value in therms of performance than Intel, a ryzen 5 3600 is you way to go.

PS: Avoid the 3600x, just a tiny 3600 overclock is fine if you want.

STR is tricky thing for processors with per core turbo boost. When passmark doing STR only one core is used which make it overclocked by turbo to max possible clock speed. But when you run PCSX2, then overall core usage can not allow to overclock to the same level, because is not running on only one core. This make per core thread rating lower than in STR test. For CPUS like i5-8400 this can be noticeable since base clock is 2,8GHz, but single core turbo is 4,0GHz. So thread rating for running pcsx2 will be somewhere between that 2,8 and 4,0 GHz because is not possible to run it at 4GHz when other cores need power. 

Still that i5 will be better than that ryzen for pcsx2. But Thread rating will be lowered when something multi-threaded is running. Not sure how it looks on AMD now.

More cores are better on PC native apps/games , tho in case of PCSX2 clock speed and single thread performance is the main key for better framerates. A 4 core processor with good enough STP with clock speed of 3.0+ Ghz is enough for pcsx2 for most of the titles.
