Okay, what I have:
* A fat PS2, connected to, for lack of anything else conveninent, a 12" amber CRT monitor. Awesome look, BTW.
* No Network Adapter
* No Action Replay, Swap Magic, or similar cheat toys
* A few old PS1 discs
* A few equally old PS2 discs
* No modifications. No flip-top, slide-card, or any other piece of pariphenalia.
Since I don't have the Network Adapter, I figured the better approach would be to directly dump things to a flash drive, using something like

Now, those of you in the cheap seats are already laughing. He didn't mod his console! It won't boot that ISO! Yep. Right.
So I figure a logical first step is to get some sort of exploit running, and then I can move onto "finding a way to get it running the extraction tool."
I've tried to follow the guidelines at
http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-Guide-to-...s-over-LAN
I prepare a CD, adding to it the disc ID for the first PS1 game I had handy, "Threads of Fate", and pop it in. Same "Insert a PS2 or PS1 format disc please" rejection notice. Firing up Threads of Fate afterwards does nothing.
What's the most likely way I mismade the disc? I tried doing the same thing but burning at only 2x, no difference. The blanks are garbage-brand 52x rated, but can you even BUY good blanks anymore?
I noticed that guide no longer has the MemcardExploit files linked; I had to find that elsewhere. Maybe that's bad.
Also, based on what I can tell, once I've got the exploit running, I can just put the necessary ELF file for the BIOS dump utility on the flash drive and launch it from inside PS2Menu, right?
