Just started using the emulator with my old PS2 collection (great work by the way), but I get the feeling it's not running as fast as it should.
I have a six core processor, with 8GB RAM, but my graphics card is only an old Geforce 9400GT 512mb.
I believe the problem is with the graphics card because when I set the emulator to run at native resolution (with recommended speed hacks) I get 35-45 FPS depending on the game. When I set it to run at a lower resolution (400x300), yes it looks horrible, but it runs at pretty much full speed no matter which game I choose.
Would a better graphics card help me here? I have been meaning to upgrade for a while and this would give me an excuse.

Yes! A newer GPU can really help!
I don't know how much you want to spend but a 100€ GPU (Radeon 7770, Geforce 650) is a good compromise, both for PCSX2 and for PC games.

Because you already have a GeForce and is known for better PCSX2 compatibility, I'd recommend going with a 650.
Also, since you have a six-core processor, you might wanna test out the 3+ core speedhack.

Ehh it's nowhere stated that GeForce has better compatibility. Also about most of the people here use probably AMD Radeons.

I've had great experience with NVIDIA, not only for PCSX2, but PC gaming in general (I like PhysX).
I wouldn't want to discredit either Radeon/GeForce users.
The 9400GT is a very dated card, so ultimately it's your choice. Maybe this will help.

Maybe this help more:

It's not a mere spec comparison, that means nothing when the architecture are so different.
Having the same price I would suggest the 7770, the PCSX2 games that have problems with the AMD GPUs are very few.

going from a 9400 to something like 450 or something will defiantly help but going from say 450gts to 660gtx ,670gts, or higher wont help that much atlest it didnt help as much as going from a 9800gt to 450gts did for me my i7 920 @ stock probably showing its age as for as this emulator goes, for most pc games its still fine
