Pcsx2 slowdowns with this much cpu power?
#1
I'm running PCSX2 0.9.8

my specs are

Windows 7 64Bit
AMD Athlon II x4 640 quad core processor @ 3.7Ghz
AMD Radeon HD 6850 1GB GDDR5
8GB corsair 1333 DDR3 RAM

And here are some pictures of the slowdowns when they happen.

Even the MAIN MENU is slowed down

Even putting it into native resulotion doesn't help too much!

still slowed down in native

Anyone have any advice? any programs or tweaks that might help my fps?
I would really hate having to buy an intel processor just to play PCSX2.. I'd rather wait for PCSX2 to get better support with an AMD processor. if it ever will?

I would have thought 3.7Ghz would be PLENTY.

my processor plays Dragon ball Z Budokai 3 fine though..
I guess its easy on the processor or something?

Budokai 3 at 50fps (It's PAL so the max fps is 50 which is smooth)

It never drops below 50fps even using ultimate attacks and such

EDIT: in case anyone has the same kind of problem try to make sure the "allow 8-bit textures" option is turned on!

Man I'm going with an AMD Phenom and sure hope it doesnt crap out my pcsx2... I'm running a duo core 2.66 right now and most game's I have tried so far run usually little to no problems. You just having FPS issues or what?

FPS issues / slowdowns would be it yep.
Playing games in 40fps~ when they're meant to be 60 is just unbearable :<
The sound can sound pretty horrific too because its slowed down.

My system specs are much lower than yours yet like I said, not many issues with what I have tried. Maybe it is the AMD CPU holding you back but I hope not... FPS would be GPU though to my knowledge and i run a dang radeon HD 3850 256MB GPU.

you up to date with directx and vid card driver's? Also have you messed with any of the pcsx2 setting's manually to see if you can achieve anything better?

Set the afinity to only two cores, use speed hacks, ee to 2 vu to 1 or 2(some times u dont need to use this), active the int, loop and the other 2 hacks, u can change the clamp modes to none in EE and VU tab.

where would I set the afinity to only two cores? and how would it make a difference? surely it can still only use 50% of its optimal power?
And thanks for the feedback! ^^

I dunno about Fate Unlimited Codes, but for Budokai Tenkaichi 3 those CPU/GPU are overkill, actually Budokai Tenkaichi 3 is much easier to emulate than Budokai 3 (around 1,7ghz x2 for tenkaichi vs around 3ghz x2 for budokai 3). Maybe your cpu seeing no load at all turns on Cool&Quiet underclocking your CPU to like 800mhz per coreTongue. You can use a program like K10Stat to fully control C&Q on your own, firstly maybe checking if it's really C&Q "fault" with core temp, cpu-z or any other program showing your actual cpu frequency.

Edit: oh and if it wasn't cpu going into higher C&Q state fault, ATI(AMD now I guess) cards have similar thing that underclocks alot your GPU while not needing all power, but I doubt it would be GPU fault as in game menu it's practically unused anyway.

Nah I already got cpu-z and cpu Thermometer running all the time and my cpu temp never gets hotter than 30 degrees Celcious. and that is damn cool. And thats balanced cooling mode.
But I'm not sure thats it either. I got Rainmeter to see my CPU usage in % and when it starts lagging in Tenkaichi 3 its 50-60% cpu usage. And since my processor has 4 cores but can only use 2 I guess 50% means 100% yes?

Nah I didn't mean temperature, I ment checking frequency while getting slowdowns couse C&Q changes that all the time in AMD cpu's.

And if you're getting 50% quad load of your CPU when you get a slowdown, then I'm pretty SURE it's working under some high C&Q state Ohmy = it's heavilly underclocked. Probably setting windows power mode to higher would be enough if you don't wanna bother doing other stuff.
