For some games it doesn't matter which mode you use. For other games nearest will be game breaking.
Just leave it like that and next time you observe a problem try first setting it back to default.

I'm not sure about that but, the different options are there to deal with the Internal algorithms and prevent denormals from happening since, it may cause a little issue in the game. It's always advisable to turn back to the defaults after once the required situation is passed.

You can try improving it a little bit by using edge antialiasing but, it still won't look as nice as hardware mode

you might have probably set the internal resolution very high at Hardware mode. you can try reducing it to get a little speed up.

It may also be a GPU bottleneck , care to give your hardware specs ?
