Look at the console, it will say the SLUS/SLES/SLJP or whatever the internal name which identifies the game. That should be enough to get a good idea of the version/region it is.

yeah just one prob though on the site it says europe version but it has 2 codes for everything and looks to be missing codes for shion and kos-mos

That means Europe needs more people creating codes for the games :/ I fear.

You should try deeper search.

Alternatively you could try using specialized applications like cheat engine, they are useful to pinpoint changes in the memory. For example, if you know the value of a certain status and find that value in a series of addresses... play a little more and check again (before that value changing), many the original addresses found will have the value changed and them you is nearing the real one you want to find... at certain point that status will change... check for the new value and it will be found on at least one the previous found addresses... that process eventually pinpoint the exact address you are after.

Take note of that address to input into the pnach and chose whatever valid value you want there.

Besides, that utility will be running at same time the game is and you can test your code there beforehand (it allows you to change the desired address and verify if it results).

http://cheats.codetwink.com/ps2/view/4189/ - European
http://cheats.codetwink.com/ps2/view/4188/ - USA

A simple search for the game's name + codebreaker returned the above links and some more, should yield similar results for the MGS 3.

The main problem is the game is for Europe (SLES) and you are seeking codes for the US version.

Sorry, I don't have the game and don't know codes for it but maybe the above information helps finding the correct ones.
