Yes, there could be some differences caused by the emulation. You have got a lot more knowledge on this game than me definitely. Unfortunately, there is no way to perform a debugging properly on the PS3. But the freeze does happen after the first battle, so there are some problems in applying the patches during the remapping of the memory on the transition.

Anyway, here is the NTSC port, it needs further testing but I have not encountered any freeze.

Yes,disc 2 requires a different pnach. The crc for disc 2 is EB39ABEC. Search cheats folder for that crc and copy/paste the codes from the disc 1 pnach. Save and you're good to go.
