Read first: Will PCSX2 run fast on my computer?

Core 2 Quad Q660 @ 2.4 GHz
4 GB RAM
Windows 7 64 bit
GeForce 8400 GS

Obviously the graphics card is what's holding me back, currently getting about 40 FPS at the opening scene in Final Fantasy X. I'm wondering, if I upgrade the card, is everything else good to go hardware-wise? If so, any particular recommendations? I'm looking to run stuff at 720p, not really any insanely high resolutions.

Thanks.

your CPU is also a little weaker.. atleast 3.0 ghz is recommended esp. if you want to run at 720p or essentially higher than native res.

your cpu is also holding you bac k you know if you play native res then that card *should* be fine. seeing you wanna go high res get either the gtx460, ati 5770 or maybe even a gts450 then you should be fine with resolutions. oc your processor to 3.2ghz or higher and you are ready to go play ffx on full speed Smile

Trying to get Star Ocean to work right now mostly because I wanna be able to play it on the computer.

you asked what they meant, so I posted what they meant. did you try what I told you? (and highest hardware possible)

ya I have Saiki but everytime when the first cut scene is over at the very start of the game. It's so slow it's unplayable.

Hey guys I'm thinking of upgradingan i5 520m to an i7 640m paired with an ati 5650. Think I'll see any significant improvements in PCSX2 emulation?
i5 520m :: ATI 5650 (700, 900) :: Samsun 830 128GB SSD:: 8GB (2x4GB) RAM

I dare ask: how slow in "unplayable"?

In my opinion anything under 50FPS is unplayable =p and I usually won't play a game unless it averages 55+

you'd hate to be me then. I get 30 and I'm happy. I played through the opening of FF12 at 7 fps Angry (it got MUCH better after leaving recks though)

You can get from 'new game' to 'end credits'. This is regardless of FPS, it simply means you could with a great deal of patience, complete the game! eg: Slow, but stable!

^^^ That's "Playable". I think what you're gettin' at is "Enjoyable". And that is can vary a lot from person to person, and if you ask me, will vary with what type of game it is too (i.e. an action game is harder to enjoy than an RPG when slowed down).

But, yeah, keeping 50fps+ (NTSC) should be enjoyable in most cases.

Going from an i5-520M to an i7-640M should definitely give you a noteworthy increase. That's something like an extra 500Mhz (with TB). If you have the cash, it's about the best mobile CPU for PCSX2 (IIRC same 2 core clock as the 940XM).

I'm looking into the 640m. It's probably what I'll go for. I don't believe my mobo is compatible with quad cores so it's the best one I can get.
