I just got a new laptop and think I should finally be able to emulate my old PS2 collection at a decent framerate. I just want to ask a naïve question, is PS2 emulation safe on laptop hardware? Can it cause overheating or damage the disc drive?

Emulating can't ever break a computer/laptop, make sure that you run it through the adapter and put the laptop on high performance, ofcourse you need to still watch out for some overheating, but it shouldn't be much. Also keep in mind that it differs how much a laptop will cost. The cheaper one is mostly the crappier the cooling is, you could buy a dock with coolers on it which you can put beneath it.

PCSX2 1.0.0 will work on my notebook (SAMSUNG RF 511-SD3)??????
Processor i7 2720qm (2.2 up to 3.1) 8GB RAM 1333mhz 1TB HD 5400rpm LCD LED HD (1366 x 768) Nvidia GeForce GT 540m (2GB with optimus)
it will.
Of course, you won't get playable speeds in the most intensive games, but it will "run"

Yes, but expect the need for a little of the VU Cycle Stealing Speedhack with that particular game. Also, Your system is pretty decent for PCSX2 in general. Aside from excessive internal resolutions (e.g. over 1080p), expect your CPU as the highest potential of bottlenecking. Some Speedhacks can be an easy way to get some improvements, but if you are capable of OCing your CPU, it will provide the greatest benefit, and with no potential side-effect (unlike Speedhacks). Have fun! And remember, everyone; The average PC is getting much more capable of casual emulation, so don't hesitate to give your new computer a try!
