Just for your interest, it's a really widespread myth and misconception that S/PDIF has limited bandwith that allows one Stereo PCM stream maximum. The most acurate answer is that the super cheap and old generation hardware we are using does not or it's not made with having in mind bigger bitrates hence it didn't or by the time they were making them they were not sure which format would be adopted for Lossless multichannel audio. This was proven with most recent hardware supporting much more audio bandwiths and formats over S/PDIF that exceeds by alot the Stereo PCM limmit such as DolbyTrueHD 5.1 AND 7.1 and some rarer even FLAC 5.1, but DolbyTrueHD 5.1 over S/PDIF is a standar for today's hardware encoders/decoders. The thing is that there is no technical bandwith limmit, S/PDIF never reached even near it's technical/physical limmits as a format, the issue is the slow widespread adoption of each audio technology that has to happen and be proven worthy before the industry would make a standar of those formats on their hardware.

To say it better, if your TV supported video input over S/PDIF protocol, you could have nice 1080p video with audio just with one RCA cable (unheard bitrates for audio), the problem is that it's not widespread and it's kind of troubling doing such thing with what you have, which is better to be abandoned as a whole idea and be done via HDMI that is less prone to having issues you have to deal when you try to standarize the format.
Update :
Regarding that nasty Xaudio.dll pcsx crash Glare!!

iam back to square 1 Angry

Despite , trying different audio drivers ... several spu-X2 pluggins and what not the darn thing keeps crashing !!!

I thought as much that myu sound card drivers were not to blame for !!

Have tried spux r5460 down to r5324 to no vail !!

I will give zerospu a swing now Huh !!!

This what the pcsx logs tell me:

Can you see if you can find a really old one on Orphis build bot?
(12-14-2012, 01:27 PM)refraction Wrote: [ -> ]Can you see if you can find a really old one on Orphis build bot?

Are you asking me Unsure ?

If so, i'll see what i can find ..;

How far back in time should i go ? Is it safe to use Plugins previous to pcsx2 1.0 build to use wel in pcsx2 > 1.0 rxxxx ?

Or do you rather want me to try out the whole pcsx2 build revision ?
Also (important), are memcards. backwards compatible ?

p.s. its strange the crash seems totaly random... sometimes i can play for hours before crash happens, and sometimes it crashes whitin 10 min!?

Thanks for the support,

cherriepoppers,
r4690 seems to be the oldest available, so you could start there. http://buildbot.orphis.net/pcsx2/index.php?m=get&rev=4690&platform=windows-x86

if that does it, it's something thats happened recently to your pc as we never had any crashing problems till people reported it recently and that was over 6 months back.

Alright thanks.. il try that build then ...

WoW, i just did an FRESH install of Win7 after doing an extensive low level format a few weeks back... my hdd is pretty much blank right now Mellow

I can't imagine having an 2 week new corrupt system already...

There is 1 member from arround here Kenoken or something i believe that did began to troubleshoot this phenomenon together with me... and he/she came to same conclusion that there is still something going on with the spuX pluggijn !!

Because he / she have had crashed aswell with the latest spu sound plugs...

i mean iam not the only one here (so it seems) that still have issues with it !!

Furthermore, i have tried nearly every sound driver i could find that is compatible with my hobo ..

I honestly don't know what else i probebly can do to work arround this !!?

But i'll sure try and test that build you proposed to me.. to get to the bottom of it ...

ill report back the results of r4690 asap Cool

P.S: Mayhap, the reason becaus no one experienced crashes is because no one have been playing for hours like me ;.. just wild guessing here ...

Since the crash either ocures right away (very rare) or after countless hours played (also random and rare)
So, its weird... there are day's i don't have any crashes at all despite playing for hours or so and there are other day's that it does !!

Not sure what to make of it!!

cherriepoppers,
(12-14-2012, 02:40 AM)Eloris Wrote: [ -> ]Nothing there disagrees with what I said, but you seem to be confused by what this actually does and does not.

Let's try to break this down very simple. Modern games make active use of these encoders for real-time multichannel audio, they're feeding them all the needed channel information so the output will be a true digital multichannel stream.

PS2 games (or the overwhelming majority) don't do this, and will output only 2 channels. You cannot magically turn this into true 5.1 sound, the information is just not there.

Now, on the PC some soundcards support encoding their output to DD or DTS. There's really only one reason for this, and that is if your sound system is plugged into some form of external decoder/receiver/whathaveyou and you can't connect your PC to it with analog methods or HDMI.
Because a digital connection over S/PDIF is limited to stereo sound unless it's encoded and compressed (because S/PDIF has terribad bandwidth and cannot transport more than 2 channels of uncompressed PCM audio), you have to use DDL or DTS Connect to still be able to receive 5.1 sound from your PC.

Note here that this has nothing do with whatever sound comes out of PCSX2.

As for DTS decoding in PCSX2, I highly doubt it, although I've never had a game that actually makes use of it. At present it won't even decode static AC3 streams various games use in FMVs, so yeah.

I remember Virgin KLM talking about the SPU able to create 48 channels. So can't the motherboard or sound card with the ability to do DDL or DTS connect be able to access that?

I really hope that devel build would get fixed so I could give a better view of how things work and come up with ideas. There's probably alot that can be done, the issue is that there are countless combinations of ways to archieve something and possibly only some of them would work nice and have the result we expect.
Well here iam again retraction... reporting back the results of pcsx 9.x r4690 (though pcsx2 say r4671 Blink )

Don't know what that means exactly ... but...

So anyway, have been tested it past couple of hours using different games... changing settings in pcsx2 mids gameplay (usually crahses more quickly when doing so .. whitin minutes of gameplay already)

But so far, no xaudio crash.... hmmm...

Maybe ill try to copy/paste and use that spuX 1.4.0 r4690 plugin back in 1.1.0 and see what happends there !!

pcsx2 9.x not bad but 1.1.0 is far more better ... because have better FPS (especialy in R&C) and i can use GSdx hacks to overcome graphic glitches such as skipdraw.. for certain games ...
Something that is missed in 0.9.x

But do know this, when those crashes ocured no speciall hacks or anything is used.. and speedhack is pretty much always at recommended /default level..except for R&C...

like EE=1 VU=0 .. etc...

Hope i wos of any help....

In the meanwhile i'll use and test pcsx2 0.9.x r4690 an bit further the next couple day's and report only back when it has crashed aswell !!

EDIT: OmG... as i wos just writing this testomonial when... i left pcsx2 running in the background and when i returned to it .. it crashed again ...
Faulty module : SPU2-X-r4690.dll .. AGAIN Glare

But the most remarkable thing about this error is , that it calles the plugin by name that causes this now and not the settings ( Xaudio.dll ) !!

At all other instances, it always has been faulty module : Xaudio2.dll or something in the line !!

So iam afraid my theory is right, nothing happends aslong you don't do anything else while pcsx2 is running and you just keep on playing !!!

That must be why i get more frequently crashes when i change something in pcsx2 while suspending (pause) teh game !

ohwell....

cherriepoppers,
In that case i guess there is something wrong with your machine or your something. That release was nearly a year and a half ago and this is the first we've heard of it. Id suggest doing memtest on your machine at the very least, not sure what else to suggest, it is a bit of a weird one.
