I played it on my friend's PC on Pcsx2, but the cutscenes and many other situations would decrease the fps dramatically and also the sound would start stuttering, the graphics were 'boxy'. He has an AMD phenom i don't know which but multicore CPU 8gb ram and a high end GPU.

Your friend's Phenom quite simply will not compare. The 2500K at stock (3.3Ghz) will exceed the Phenom at a high overclock (i.e. 4.0Ghz).

So if your friend Phenom is at a low clockrate, no amount of excess cores will really matter. And "boxy" graphics are likely due to low res. A truely "high-end" GPU should handle higher res.

Just bought this at best buy $1000 what do you think, good enough for PCSX2? I woul;d appreciate any opinion, good or bad, still kinda thinking about taking it back and getting something else, bought it specifically to emulate 6th gen systems (BTW it runs Wii mario galaxy near flawlessly, 7th gen system, defeated the first boss, giant baby plantTongue) as my compac presario R4125ca couldnt run 6th gen systems properly, ran N64 flawlesly though Smile thanx
It is quite capable of handling many games, just definitely not anything too demanding.

You can still need the help of some Speedhacks with some games, so be sure and apply some when a game is having slowdown. Try the Preset options if unsure which hacks to use.

Always be modest with the internal resolution (i.e. use native), since that GPU isn't very strong.
thanks, ive had sucess with some games, star trek shattered universe, FFX, near full frame rate but others like shadow of the colossus, im finding i can only get a max of 45fpm and thats when looking at walls or something, not sure if thats the emulator (0.9.8) or my laptop, though i have tried a high number of configutations, can you recommend a few games with high compatability (playable) that are among the most demanding of the PS2 hardware, so that i can have a basis as to what my hardware should consist of. thank you for your assistance.

Hi everybody

I'm going to buy a laptop and i will use it to play PS2 games with pcsx2 0.98

The game i want to emulate are essentially RPG like FFX, FFXII, P3, P4, Shadow of Colossus, Odin Sphere, Valkyrie Profile Silmeria, Grandia 3 or Star Ocean 3.

I would like to know what processor must i choose between a core i5 480m (2666 - 2933 MHz) and a core i5 2410m (2300 - 2900 MHz) to be able to play the game above fluently ?

Which processor is the most capable?

Same question with the graphic card between ATI mobility radeon HD 5650/6550 and NVIDIA GT525m/540m

Thanks for your assistance
Hey subaru, FYI ive dedicated in the last 2 weeks roughly 100 hours to searching and learning about laptop hardware and its potential, your query sounds near identical to what i have just recently bought (3 posts up from this one, ive emulated shadow of the colossus and FFX, read my post bud) so using that as a basis ive been told by others that the nvidia 540m would be the best way to go, while it possesses less pipelines and a slower core speed then my radeon 6490m it has far superior shader speed, Memory Bus Width and Max. Amount of Memory, so in other forums people agree that the nvidia 540m would destroy my card.

As for my CPU the i5 2410m its a great processor it has a higher transistor count than the i5 540m and also has its own GPU installed directly on the die (HD Graphics 3000 650-1200MHz its used as a power saving processor for less intensive applications) it is also built on the new Sandy bridge architecture, the i5 540m on the other hand utilities the older Arrandale architecture, read this insert from notebookcheck.net :

"Due to the improved architecture and the new Turbo Boost 2.0, the average performance of the Core i5-2410M is higher than a similar clocked Arrandale Core i5. In our benchmarks, the 2410M was able to beat the fast Intel Core i5-560M with 2.7-3.2GHz and is therefore suited for even demanding tasks."

Yes, the i5 2410m beats both the i5 540m and the i5 560m, PCSX2 requires at least 2.6 ghz processor and the i5 2410m is dual core 2x 2.3ghz, 2x 2.6ghz with turbo mode or 2.9ghz for one core, im wondering if maybe that's not quite enough, might be best to go higher, personally im not satisfied with just emulating to get it running at a decent frame rate, im looking to at least increase the eye candy so it will look smooth, no jaggies and better textures. overall you will probably want something a little superior to my laptop, an HP DV6-6178ca, be prepared to spend over $1000 my friend (that's exactly what mine cost) , looks like i may have to.

P.S. here's a handy site i found that others seem to praise as the definitive site for laptop CPU and GPU comparison information, believe me you'll want to check this out. good luck.

----- http://www.notebookcheck.net/Notebook-La....48.0.html -----

this is a pretty easy site to navigate, i find myself opening multiple windows to do a side by side comparison of CPUs and GPUs

EDIT: as for shadow of the colossus, i only got 45 fps looking at a wall close up otherwise i was getting a steady 36fps (emulator set at lowest setting possible, believe me), ive already killed the first 2 bosses, the boss battles are ok (kind of an advantage at that frame rate) its the traveling and everything else that's overly annoying.
Thank you for your reply.

I've already checked on notebookcheck.

Actually, i've got two laptop in mind

Asus x53sv-sx111v (core i5 2410m @ 2,3-2,9Ghz and Nvidia GT 540m)

Dell inspiron 15R (core i5 480m @ 2,66-2,93 Ghz and ATI mobility radeon HD 5650)

Some of the RPG i would like to play are demanding games like FF12, Valkyrie profile 2, dragon Quest 8 or star ocean 3)

Which of these two laptops could run the game above smoothly
Here is my computer setup:

AMD Athlon Dual Core 4450e @2.30GHz *I was told it was better than a previous CPU card - Pentium D 3.20ghz - and I haven't a clue about AMD CPU cards, how to identify a decent amd cpu card from a crappy one*
2.00 GBs of RAM *I think they are Crucial Ballistix*
Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bit OS
Compaq-Presario Motherboard
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT @1279 MB grahpics memory

And if this helps at all, the "Windows Experience Index" gave my pc a 4.9 base score (Processor & Ram), Graphics (both) is 6.9, and Hard Disk is 5.9 - just adding this just in case it does matter, not telling my score for some popularity crap.

So can my PC run the PCSX2 emulator? And if you so, on a scale of 1 to 10, how well do you think it will run (provided I use the best possible settings for the emulator)?
I primarily am askin so that I might be able to play "Shadow of Rome" and "Colosseum: Road to Freedom".

Also, if my computer CAN handle the emulator, please tell me how I should setup the emulator (settings, plugins, ect), I've tried setting up the ps1 emulator before an failed miserably so many times, then my cousin (who is now a couple hundred miles away now) takes 1 crack at it without checking the readme an gets it to run flawlessly. So, if my computer can handle it, please tell me how I should set it up, thanks a ton in advance.

Well, I don't know those games personally, but...

Your CPU is definitely your big potential slowdown. It's old and slow. You will definitely want to use Speedhacks. If you're uncertain what to apply, give the Preset options a try. You may very well need to push them all the way, and still may not get full speed (or even very playable).

Your GPU is definitely got some power, just don't expect too high of a resolution with every game.
