Please provide us what game you want to play. But with that GPU, I think it only can emulate some 2D Games. Persona at medium speed.
You are at loss because of that GPU. Solution ? Buy new GPU or overclock your CPU. It depends on you, really.

Tough call. The i7-720QM can go up to 2.4GHz in dual-core mode (power and temps allowing). However, if you can overclock the P8700, then the performance will be pretty constant. Rough estimate they'll be pretty much on par (assuming Turbo Boost works) with the oc'ed P8700 edging out the i7.
By the way, why a laptop? Pretty sure you'd probably need to plug it in anyway if you want to do some gaming.

I would bet the P8700. Unless you overclock the i7.

Not necessarily. I can pull off about 2 full hours of gameplay (battery powered) with the screen brightness at MAX. Of course, that's with a 9-cell.

You are using vista, so 2gb ram is enough but if you have c2d overclocked to 3.2GHz or higher + Geforce 8600GT or higher then i can bet you will have more than 45+fps in most games.
