I know what you mean, but I could always retort with me preferring that image wider, then you preferring it taller, etc, and it'd be an endless cycle.

In terms of PS2 widescreen patching though, 16:10 is more work than 16:9 because you also have to find and change that vertical Y-axis value.

We use PCs for almost everything nowadays. Some people even watch porn on them! *gasp* I do a lot of work too, such as managing several websites and doing video editing occasionally, and I've never once thought to myself "Hmm... my work could be a lot more efficient if I had more vertical space!". 16:9 does the job just fine for me.

I'm a big gamer myself (I have 36 PS2 games ripped to my hard drive), and I watch a lot of shows and movies now (Netflix on PC) so 16:9 fulfills a better job, plus it's more compatible to hook up to HDTV (which I plan on doing eventually). The irony is that you're on a gaming forum right now.

Just a suggestion, if you want to free up some browsing space on a 16:9 monitor, you can also get rid of those nasty toolbars if you have them:

I switched from a 1280x1024 (4:3) to a 1920x1080 (16:9) a year ago, and my first thoughts were... WOW, this is wide! You eventually get used to it though, whereas it seems you have to constantly switch back and forth between a 16:10 and 16:9 monitor. It's almost as if 16:10 manufacturers intentionally made the resolution higher than their 16:9 counterparts just to continue this debate (conspiracy...?).

I consider 16:9 as the glorious master race and view 16:10 as the equivalent to the Dreamcast, N-Gage, HD DVD and John McCain. Forgive me. Closedeyes
Well, there is one more advantage in 16:10 in widescreen patches. One is that there are games that have the texture pop-in issue that can't get fixed so if you have a 16:10 screen you can increase the pixels that get rendered on the sides just to fit the extra pixels of 16:10 and you have less chances of something poping in. Another great thing is that you notice 2D ellements such as HUD and minimaps recieving less distortion making it less obvious that it's a forced widescreen mode. I actualy really like 16:10 more than 16:9 as an aspect ratio visualy, I don't like 4:3 at all but 16:9 seems a bit tad wide for the whole idea behind why 16:9 started and now with super wide aspect ratios getting used in cinemas and movies I get really anoyed. Just because I hate 4:3 this doesn't mean I will love anything that will go as wide as possible. No, infact I may hate it equaly after a point. I believe 16:10 is the best ballance between both.
BTW, Just noticed, I had a feeling so long that it was wrong...
Final Fantasy XII's 16:9 setting may be in a way 16:9 but it's not correct. It's like a bit zoomed in and showing a bit extra in the sides. I'm gonna need to correct that. I guess they did that for performance reasons but I guess this isn't a problem in PCSX2 so we could get rid of it.

This one nemesis2000 did seems to follow the correct pholosophy, could someone port that to the normal versions of the game?

Better letting cinema alone, there things are yet more extreme and to play "original" movies aspect ratio is like a thin strip on a 16:9 and yet thinner in a 16:10.

As stated before, it is an "immersion" thing... the sense of ample spaces, but at some point it involves a kind of deformation on the image edges so to reinforce the sense. The point is 16:9 was found as optimal compromise and is not driven by utilitarianism.

Under the utilitarian view point, well, in offices many monitors are used "inverted"... I mean as a vertically longer rectangle and for obvious reason it is better to display letter and office documents.

Just than the larger the rectangle is, more immerse we feel in a movie or game. We don't give much of attention to vertical increase, it just mean more constraint.

That subjectivity is yet more complex than have been discussed till now, I'm pretty sure many of you have dabbed with increasing FOV just to get a bit more of that sense of horizontal amplitude. If you have done it you know what I mean.

Then yes, from my very first post on the subject was stated it should not become a fight because everyone could present an advantage of his/her preferred aspect ratio and none would be wrong.

Maybe the 16:10 is better for the day to day work, I don't know, but for immersion the larger is better, some people will go for more than one monitor to get it even larger... but that's another story.

The reason for 16:10 becoming rarer is it maybe should never exist to start with for it means more complication for media production and was never a "de facto" standard for media presentation. OK, is true than more than one PC game producer gave the option of 16:10 in their games, but then the 16:9 is there also... the inverse is not always true, and for a reason.
Unless you didn't know, there's an easy way to compare 16:9 & 16:10 display with PCSX2, even if you don't have a 16:10 monitor.
Go to "Config" > "Emulation Settings" > "GS Window", set "Aspect Ratio" to "Fit to Window/Screen"
and give "Custom Window Size" 16:10 dimensions, 4x "800" x "500".
Make a savestate in some game, close PCSX2, put a 16:9 patch in the cheats folder, re-run PCSX2 & the game, load the savestate and observe,
close PCSX2, replace the 16:9 patch with a 16:10 patch (or alter the patch), re-run PCSX2 & the game, load the savestate and observe.
And needless to say, use Windowed mode.

The comparison made by "devina40" in post #1044, look weird.
Unless there is a zoom-hack in the patch (which I assume there isn't) She obvioulsy did something wrong.

16:10 rules! Biggrin

Wait, we are not talking about image stretching.

PS: off topic, is only with me or that snow overlay is making the browse status bar flicking to despair?

Edit: to keep a humorous tone, with your method, after the "conversions" the 16:9 stretched to 16:10 gets the characters thinner and taller, the inverse gets them shorty and fatty, well, I'd rather have them as they are but some may prefer one or the other way around Smile

To prevent the cases above is the reason for that "keep the aspect ratio", but the stretching is supplied so to satisfy all tastes Laugh

Ahh, and the comparisons from Devina are correct... lager screen means showing more things at the sides if the proportion is kept.
nosisab Ken Keleh,

It was happening to me aswell, its the 'snow' script. Go up and hit the compatibility view' button on your browser.
25:9... LOL this is a pure overkill for gaming...

While I really enjoy this:

I don't know how I would feel about this:

Whatever, right now I'm super annoyed by Final Fantasy XII's 16:9 option, it's quite incorrect, can anybody help me fix it?

for pal or ntsc version?
Okay, moving aside from all the aspect ratio banter, I assume FF12's 16:9 resolution was intentionally zoomed in closer to help prevent lag (less objects being displayed on-screen), but since this is PCSX2, it's not necessary.

Fixes for both NTSC-U and PAL versions would be appreciated (kill two birds with one stone), otherwise someone will inevitably bring this up again in the future.
