I see you settled on a float value of 1.4 for the textbox hack? Sounds good, I hope it's wide enough.

I think when you distribute the first beta patch, you might as well also replace the .elf file with the hardcoded .elf file with all the widescreen codes... FMV, no black borders, matrix, textbox. The goal is to make it as much as 1.5 Remix as possible. Think you can do it for us?

There is absolutely no reason why anyone should be playing it on a real PS2 anymore in 4:3 480i...
PCSX2 should be the way to go.
Sorry if this is common knowledge, but what are the matrix and textbox hacks for?
Go to page 258 and you'll see what the matrix hack does. It's good to have on because it fixes the proportions of some things.

HOWEVER...

It will also make textboxes narrower. To fix this, we enable the textbox hack and make the value 1.3333333333333333 repeated so they look normal again.

The Final Mix has Japanese text so putting English letters into narrower textboxes gives bad results, so if we have the matrix hack enabled for the FM version as well as want to provide a little extra space for the English letters, we can put in a wider value of 1.4.

If you find a way to make the textboxes auto adjust size to the English letters, then stick with 1.3333333. ;p

It's impressive what you've managed to do with Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X / X-2, devina. At the same time, it is overwhelming and discouraging to see how much work you put into finding all of those separate values for each element. I can see some popular games getting this kind of treatment, but I can't see a large amount of games having their aspect ratios for 2D elements fixed with this method.

I wonder, is it possible to leave the 2D elements at their native size so that they are not being upscaled and they simply become smaller on the screen when the resolution is increased? This is the method that is used in most PC games and mods which use static 2D images and text and seems to work well. Of course, I realize that it's different when you're working with games which you have no direct access to their code.

In some instances such as backgrounds and some menu elements, I can see this not being practical as things need to be in proper proportion with the rest of the elements. However, in the case of most HUD's, Map Overlays, Textboxes and Fonts, I think this method would provide the best viewing experience for the user because, even when 2D elements are in their proper aspect ratios, upscaled 2D images become blurry and jagged and sometimes have artifacts around them as a result of the upscaling. The effect of this can be remedied somewhat by using filters such as Scanlines, but this also takes away from the HD experience of viewing 3D models in high resolution.

Of course, this probably isn't possible (or is extremely difficult), or I'm sure it would've been tried before by bright folks such as yourself. Either way, it's great to see some real progress being made! I wish I could help in some way but I'm not very savvy when it comes to this sort of thing. Wouldn't really even know where to begin.
I wouldn't recommend making 2D elements smaller instead of narrower.
It's more trouble than it's worth, imo, You may need both the x and y coordinates, plus it could break other things.
If things such as the minimap in FFX feel too big, you can disable it alltogether in the options.

For widescreen hacking, Hyakki's Widescreen Helper, Elf Search Tool, Cheat Engine and ps2dis are the four main must have progams. Read the guides and useful info in the first post. Refer to the archive for the current state of each patch.
OK, I got a EVT (subtitle) fontfix for Kingdom Hearts 1 Final Mix as well. ^^
Now, it won't run completely perfect on versions other than the translation one without modification.... but I'll get to that.

The base code:
Code:
patch=1,EE,0010d4f4,word,2403000F
patch=1,EE,0010d504,word,3C013F1F
patch=1,EE,0010d508,word,3421FFFC
patch=1,EE,0010d518,word,24030012
patch=1,EE,0010d528,word,3C013F40
patch=1,EE,0010d8f0,word,3C014246
patch=1,EE,0010d918,word,3C014216
That will make the width proper, but will also make the height smaller. Line height should remain about the same, so stuff should stay lined up. (2 of those lines fixes line height.)

To make the character heights what they should be, I had to use a hook... there wasn't a lot of room where I needed it.
Code:
0010cab0 j $hookloca     #jump to hook

hookloca:
  addiu a1, zero, $0003
  sll v1, s5, 2
  divu v1, a1
  mflo v1
  j $0010cab8            #jump back
  addu a1, s6, v1
I used some space created by moving a string table, so the address' I used are already in-use by the game normally. But if you can fit this in somewhere, it should work fine.

Note that the pnach code above will work without the hook, but the characters will be shorter as well.
That's awesome!We could really use your skills not just for KH, but widescreen in general.
When you can, see if you can fix the font for the US version too.
And maybe any font fixes for ReChain of Memories US version.

I'd check out the font fix but I'm without a comp for a while.
Can I request a widescreen patch for the german version of Kingdom Hearts 2?

I've tried the ones available, but the only thing they do is to disable the subtitles, the game is still in 4:3 for me.

Maybe this is needed:
(SYSTEM.CNF) Software version = 1.00
(SYSTEM.CNF) Disc region type = PAL
ELF (cdrom0:\SLES_542.33;1) Game CRC = 0xC398F477, EntryPoint = 0x0010001C
(SYSTEM.CNF) Detected PS2 Disc = cdrom0:\SLES_542.33;1
(SYSTEM.CNF) Software version = 1.00
(SYSTEM.CNF) Disc region type = PAL
Did you try renaming the CRC of the PAL one in the archive to the German CRC?
