Strangely enough if you leave it at default it wants to run at 60fps, even though it never went above 30 on the PS2. If you set EE to 2 it puts a 30fps limit on it and actually produces better framerate than a real PS2

Ah, hmm that's strange that it doesn't have AVX supported, as I used the plugin for a good 20 minutes with no crash. Thanks for the confirmation though. I tried many different combinations of the EE and VU sliders for this particular game, but unless I have EE set to 3, I can't have VU less than 1 and I hate using VU hack because it makes the game look choppy.

From what I've seen the AMD FX series processors work best with the sse2 plugin, even though they support sse4..etc (due to poor design these plugins might actually get worse performance on the bulldozer processor)
AVX is best used for software mode only.

After some more testing, I found that the difference between both as far as performance goes, is almost negligible. I can't say I am using the most accurate testing methods, but there is hardly any notable differences in performance when using SSE2 and SSE4. Either way, I've found the fluidity I was looking for (mostly). The game runs at a constant 30 FPS so it looks as smooth, most of the time, as I wanted.

Also, thank you for pointing that out Squall Leonhart. I don't know anything about CPU's, as I already mentioned. I'll believe anything anyone tells me. Tongue

afaik it's not a universal performance advantage, but some demanding scenes profit considerably from using the ssse3 or sse4.1 extensions.

you have your own thread.
stop spamming around
Posted this somewhere else by mistake, can't seem to delete the thread though.

First off, a screenshot sent to me by a friend that just started playing.

[attachment=39255]

Their specs are almost identical to mine and our settings and build are exactly the same. Apparently it mostly occurs in 'outdoor' areas. I can't replicate it on my own rig no matter what I try. According to my friend, using software mode does NOT fix it.

Next up...

[attachment=39256][attachment=39257]

This isn't a huge problem, since this 'effect' is only used in 3 cutscenes in the entire game. But it's there, and so I figured I'd include it here. It can be fixed by using software mode.

[attachment=39258]

And then there's this, these blurry splotches appear in certain cutscenes. It looks a lot worse in motion. I believe this has only been happening for the last thousand or so revisions, but I'm having trouble tracking down the exact build where this started happening.

[attachment=39259]

It can be fixed by enabling the alpha hack, but I'm not sure if that breaks anything else. Not a big deal, I guess. It also makes the game look a bit sharper. EDIT: never mind. Looks like alpha hack just causes it to show up elsewhere instead. Looks even worse. Really need to track down an old build and see where things went wrong. EDIT 2: Actually, seems to be linked to using a custom resolution. My bad.

[attachment=39273][attachment=39274]

Something else that I unfortunately don't have a screenshot of - on certain hardware (another computer I have and someone else that posted about this on another board) character faces won't render during cutscenes. Kind of creepy looking. Also, certain effects were missing (the 'bam' when you guard break/interrupt attacks/etc). Can be fixed with software mode, iirc.

Here's a comparison shot showing a depth of field effect that doesn't look quite right in hardware. In software it correctly blurs distant scenery, but hardware mode applies a slight blur to almost everything at high resolutions, and isn't used at all at native res. The higher the internal res, the less blurry things become. Using the alpha hack also seems to make things a little clearer in certain circumstances.

[attachment=39260][attachment=39261][attachment=39265]

There's also the flashing geometry weirdness in hardware mode. But that's probably a well known bug. Software mode fixes it. Hard to take a screenshot of it.

Hopefully putting all this stuff in one post helps at some point. That first issue I mentioned is really bugging my friend and I feel bad about not being able to help them out.
